2018 Subaru BRZ

Serving Hazle Township, PA, Kingston, and Wilkes-Barre

Building a great performance roadster is a strenuous exercise in balance and minimalism. Make it too large, and you sacrifice performance; add too many features and it becomes too impractical to push to its limits. That is why the Subaru BRZ became such an instant success among enthusiasts when it arrived on the scene in 2012. After many years of improvements, tweaks and updates, its winning formula remains the same: a low center of gravity thanks to Subaru’s BOXER engine, a perfect weight distribution and just the right amount of features to feel complete as a daily driver as well as a performance car. With the updates added to the model this year, the 2018 Subaru BRZ remains a top choice for drivers looking for an old-school performance roadster. Here are some of the reasons that make it such a standout vehicle.

Exterior and Performance

The heart of the 2018 Subaru BRZ is its 2.0-liter BOXER horizontally-opposed engine. It’s different from conventional engines due to the positioning of its cylinders, which move side-to-side rather than up or down, like on an inline engine, or at an angle like in a V-6 or a V-8 engine. This allows the engine to rest further down, lowering the center of mass for better handling and making the front end of the car more aerodynamic. The 205 horsepower that it generates is also impressive for the small and lightweight chassis. All BRZ models offer very precise steering with great feedback, as well as a tight, performance-spec suspension, but the tS model, which is new for 2018 takes it to the next level. Tuned by Subaru’s high-performance STI division, the 2018 BRZ tS is even more responsive and on-point than the base models, as well as slightly faster thanks to the added carbon-fiber and aerodynamic panels. Both the base and the tS setups will feel amazing for any enthusiast hopping behind the wheel.

Interior and Technology

The 2018 Subaru BRZ is unapologetic about being a sports car, and its interior reflects that. The cockpit is open, with clean lines and an unobstructed view of the outside for better maneuverability. The front seats offer a dynamic seating position and plenty of support in both the base upholstery, the optional Alcantara leather or the fancy synthetic suede of the tS model, all of which feel great in any weather thanks to the optional seat heating and dual-zone climate control features. The rear seats can be used to ferry two more passengers if necessary, but also serve as extra storage, as they fold flat with a trunk pass-through.

The 2018 Subaru BRZ continues its minimalist balancing act when it comes to the feature set, covering all of the modern must-haves without taking away from the performance focus. A backup camera and smartphone integration are present on the 6.2-inch standard touchscreen display that can be upgraded to a 7-inch model, and all BRZs come standard with an eight-speaker sound system, Bluetooth, and both HD and satellite radio. Any BRZ has everything you need to stay connected while you drive, but not enough to distract you from the car’s smooth maneuvers.

Safety

As a nimble and athletic vehicle, its responsive controls, quick acceleration and good sightlines make for the best safety features, but all drivers will appreciate the extras Subaru adds on top of that just in case. A rearview camera and a programmable traction control are standard features on the 2018 BRZ, as are hands-free calling and smartphone app options. The BRZ also does very well for a car its size when it comes to crash testing. It sweeps the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash tests with top scores in all but one category, where it just barely falls short. Together, that makes for a car that is just as safe on the open road as it is on the track.
