Exterior and Performance

Impreza gets its power from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional. Steering is precise and provides excellent feedback about what’s going on where the rubber is meeting the road. The Impreza is peppy off the line. It’s brakes provide good pedal pressure immediately and inspire confidence when you need to reduce speed quickly. But handling is Impreza's strong suit, with standard all-wheel drive providing a stable feel for whoever’s behind the wheel.

Interior and Technology

Functionality has always been a Subaru trademark, but the 2018 Impreza's interior represents a huge leap forward in terms of nice touches that could even be considered luxurious. The Impreza's front seats are well-bolstered but comfortable, even when you spend long periods of time in the saddle. The rear seats are plenty comfortable as well. The Impreza’s suspension is supple enough to cast aside bumps in the road, both large and small, without breaking a sweat. Wind noise? What wind noise? It’s virtually non-existent, even at 80 mph. Thanks to a spacious cabin and thoughtfully laid out controls, the Impreza is one of the more ergonomically friendly choices in the segment. This Impreza is bigger than ever before, and it shows. The cabin is long on headroom and legroom, and forward visibility is excellent due to a large windshield. A large rear window, in both the sedan and the hatchback, make for great rear visibility as well. In fact, Impreza uses big glass all around for excellent visibility in any direction.

Technology features stand out on the newest Impreza. A redesigned touchscreen and the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provide a vastly improved experience over the previous Impreza infotainment system. With a layout reminiscent of a smartphone, the Limited's 8-inch home screen is intuitive and easy to see and understand. Importantly, it responds well to a human touch. Impreza’s navigation system is user friendly and makes finding points of interest easy. Its Bluetooth connects to a music source quickly, and voice controls are simple, responsive and easily accessed through a button on the steering wheel. You can also manage the radio and a connected phone using voice control, which may not be cutting-edge but is very convenient nonetheless.

Safety

Adaptive cruise control is available with the "EyeSight" package, and it performs well. It doesn't slam on the brakes when you’re rapidly approaching a slower moving object; at the same time, it doesn't lag too far behind either. Lane keeping assist also does its job well. Additional safety features include electronic stability control, a rollover protection system, traction control, a blind spot monitor and auto-leveling headlights. Impreza gets a perfect five out of five stars in NHTSA crash tests, and its an IIHS top safety pick.
